HUNTER William J. -- On Monday, March 29, 1999 at the St. Catharines General Hospital, in his 89th year; beloved husband for 70 years of Grace, of Niagara-on-the-Lake; dear father of Virginia (Reg Haines) of St. Catharines, Eileen (Allan Counsell), Bob (Ruth) and Willo (Steve McMillan), all of Niagara-on-the-Lake; brother of Christina Steen, Bella Massie, Robina (Bob Jamieson) and Douglas (Betty), all of Niagara-on-the-Lake; brother-in-law of Mabel, of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by 3 sisters, Jessie Jolley, Helen Woodruff and Margaret Hunter, and a brother, Edward.
Born in Skene, Scotland, he immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1912 and settled in Niagara Township. A very active member of the community, he served as Reeve of Niagara Township, was Warden Reeve of Lincoln County in 1955, Chairman of the Niagara District School Board in 1962-63, an elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, a member of the Niagara Lodge No.2 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Niagara Hospital, was an active member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was appointed as the first Citizen of the Year by the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1963.
Mr. Hunter is at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chapel of the MORGAN FUNERAL HOMES, 415 Regent Street, where his family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. A memorial service under the auspices of Niagara Lodge No. 2 A.F. & A.M. will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 6:45. Service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Internment Church Cemetery. As an expression or sympathy, those who wish may make a memorial donation to either St Andrew's Presbyterian Church or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario. |
